What the evening looks like
You arrive at our base in Sinettä at 19:00. We start with a warm welcome inside, a chance to get warm, and a proper briefing — tonight’s weather, how the snowmobile works, how we ride together as a group, and how we communicate on the trail. Then we get you kitted out with thermal overalls, boots, helmet and gloves.
Once we head out, the first stretch is the training section — but you’re already riding. We start easy, make sure everyone feels comfortable on the machine, and pick up the pace as the group settles in. From there we ride a mix of forest trails and open sections, away from the village and any street lighting.
The destination is our own hill — a private vantage point above the treeline, with open views in every direction. There’s a kota at the top, a traditional Lappish hut with an open fire in the middle. We grill sausages over the flames, pour a hot drink, and spend a good while there: stepping outside to watch the sky, stepping back in to warm up. Engines off, no other groups around. When the sky is clear, this is one of the best places we know to look for the lights.
Why this tour, and why us
Most evening Northern Lights tours in Lapland leave from somewhere closer to the city — which means more light pollution and more groups in the same place. Our base in Sinettä is 20 minutes north of Rovaniemi, and from there we ride further out, into terrain we know well. The kota and the hilltop are ours — when we’re there, we’re on our own.
The group stays small, usually 4 to 6 snowmobiles, and you’ll have the same guide with you for the whole evening. Our guides have been riding these forests since they were young. They’ll keep an eye on the sky during the ride, and they know where to stop and look. They’ll also take photos and short videos during the evening and email them to you afterwards, so you don’t need to worry about stopping for pictures.
The snowmobiles are BRP Lynx, built in a factory 20 minutes from where we ride. New machines, with heated grips, footrests and a heated passenger seat — everything that makes a difference when you’re out for three hours after dark.
